This Panama location is also in close proximity to several marina projects that are under construction for investment opportunities along this beautiful coastline. The amazing history of Portobello Portobello is one of the most historically significant locations along Panama's Caribbean coast. Pirates such as the famous Henry Morgan made frequent trips to the city during the time Spain used it as a shipping center for sending treasure from South American back to the homeland. A number of forts were built to protect this natural harbor and the remains of the forts of Santiago and San Geronimo still exist and serve as interesting attractions for Panama tours. Other incredible ruins exist as well. The ruins of the "Customs House", which dates back to 1630, are a typical stop for Panama tourism trips. In addition to the Customs House, the remains of the church of La Merced still exist for visitors to enjoy. The last building to be constructed by the Spaniards at this Panamanian location, the church of San Felipe, was inaugurated in 1814 and still stands today. The Black Christ of Portobello The church of San Felipe is home to the city's most valued and best guarded relic, a beautifully carved statue of Jesus of Nazareth. Because of the rich, dark wood that was used for the statue, it was called the "Black Christ". Every year on October 21st, the city of Portobello holds a grand celebration of its history and of its valuable statue. Hundreds of people come from around the country come to this Caribbean real estate for a day of festivities that culminates when the statue is brought from the church on a platform and carried by 80 men through the streets of the city in a candlelight vigil until it resumes its location in the church.
