Wine Country - Los Carneros

Female Abroad

Most people when you mention "Wine Country" and "California" they automatically go to Napa or Sonoma but I highly recommend Los Carneros. Not many people have heard of this town but it almost right smack dab in the middle of both Sonoma and Napa so you get the best of both worlds plus besides your standard wines you can also find some pretty good bubbly.

Things to Do

When it comes to things to do, it is a super easy day trip from San Francisco which has numerous things for you to do and if you really wanted to, you could even drive a bit further to visit Napa and / or Sonoma if you really wanted to. If you were wanting to stay in Los Carneros then expect to be out in nature doing things like hiking, golfing, biking, and horseback riding to name a few. If you are a little less active there are quite a few art galleries and museums to wander through.

What about Walla Walla, Washington instead?

If California is too over done or you are looking for something different then check out Walla Walla, Washington. Besides just an unusual name and onions, Walla Walla is also a gorgeous wine region. This area has about 120 wineries and has a great offering mix of both red and white varieties. The area is split into six areas so if you go for a week, you could easily visit an area per day. The Southside has views of the Blue Mountains, the Airport district is built in an old WWII army airfield, walk along Main Street in the Downtown district to find a large amount of tasting rooms within stumbling distance of each other, Eastside is your quintessential rolling hills of vines, Westside is regularly a winner for the best wine region in America, and The Rocks district which technically isn't in Walla Walla but is close enough.

Besides drinking there are lots of little shops to explore and really great restaurants. Pioneer Park is a nice little jaunt with some of the oldest trees in the entire state. If the Oregon Trail is of any interest, then visit the Whitman Mission to walk part of it and the Fort Walla Walla Museum to learn more about. This city was also the childhood he of Adam West (the PG Batman, Mayor Adam West in family guy) and the Kirkman House Museum has a room full of props and memorabilia from his Batman days. If you have a vehicle then you could always head to Seattle, WA or Portland, OR as both cities are four hours away.
