Currency Update

by Female Abroad

Starting January 2021 Cuba is getting rid of their dual currency system and is just going to use the Cuban Peso (CUP), getting rid of the tourist currency CUC. Stories below have great info but we will see how the country change affects things like pricing.

Documentation

by Female Abroad

Since our Cuba trip will be here before I know it I felt that it was time to brush up on documentation needed as things change so much without warning when traveling. As we are Canadian I'm not too worried about our reason for travel being legit like the American's need it. Turns out for us Canadians, nothing has changed. Note: Since our Aug/Sept trip I have updated this information.

Toilets

by Female Abroad

I'm not sure if starting my trip in Cuba was a good thing since then the "horrible" Caribbean bathrooms on the other islands were a million times better or if I should have ended with it. Either way, be prepared for bathrooms to look like the above photo.

Scammed in Cuba

by Female Abroad

I always thought of myself as a savvy traveller and that scams would be obvious. Well it turns out scams are obvious but when you feel bad for people you just kinda go along with it.... that is how I found myself following a strange man and his "daughter" down a dark alley but before I get too far into the story, lets start with how I got here.

Arriving In Cuba & Getting Money

by Female Abroad

NOTE: there have been currency changes in 2021 but this article still has really great information on money in Cuba

"Get money at the local Acadeca or Bank", "go to the arrivals area as the line up is shorter". All of this seemed like great information and tips until we got off the plane.

Funds - Cuba (pre-2021)

by Female Abroad

NOTE: there have been currency changes in 2021 but this article still has really great information on money in Cuba

First off, If you are flying into the country without an all-inclusive vacation you will need to be able to prove you have access to at least CUC 50/person/day during you trip.

Internet

by Female Abroad

With technology these days we really do take for granted the ease of being able to log into the internet whenever and however we want. In Cuba, it is a little different. Introduced in the 90's before the Russians left, the internet infrastructure had not changed much prior to 2015 but it is slowly improving with over 650 locations that offer access across the country.

Transportation - Havana

Havana Food Hints & Tips

by Female Abroad

We ate only in Casa Particulars so we don't have experience with the government run places but we found the food to be very good. Rabbit stewed in red wine, spiced slow cooked lamb, pumpkin soup, caramel flan - we were spoiled. The food however is too much for one person.

Airport - Havana

by Female Abroad

After you've deplaned, customs is the first line up that you will get to spend time in (it won't be the last!). This room is a musty, windowless reminder of the 80's with multiple lines and signs to tell you which line is for who. Make sure that you stand in the right one or they will point you to the back.

Vinales

Vinales

by Female Abroad

Besides Havana, I wanted to check out Vinales (pronounced Bin-al-es) before the American's got too far into Cuba and started making changes. Why Vinales you might ask, well this is where the tobacco fields are and where arguably some of the world's best cigar leaves come from so I figured it would be one of the more "updated" areas once American's can move into the country more.

Mural de la Prehistoria (Prehistoric Mural)

by Female Abroad

I read a lot of mixed reviews on about this site so I was not interested in going but it was insisted that it was well worth the trip so I caved. Upon arriving, the mural was not anything phenomenal to look at but the history behind it made it very interesting.

Cigar Making - Vinales

by Female Abroad

Our first stop in Vinales was a cigar field to visit a guide that would take us through the cigar making process. Getting out of the car we were greeted by a chicken chasing her chicks and a guide who spoke perfect English and escorted us inside a hut before our tour guide for the day informed us that the building was actually a traditional farmers hut that they believe withstands hurricanes better than new homes do. Since this building is still standing I would say that it probably does.

Cueva del Indio (Indian Cave)

by Female Abroad

When looking into things to in Vinales, the Cueva del Indio came up as a must do attraction. After watching videos on YouTube I was hooked. Not sure why but I take to exploring caves (or underground) like a fish takes to water, I just have an urge to do it so this was right up my alley. Until I did it and found out it wasn't worth it.
